How to Care for Your Garment
Githerments garments are made from reclaimed and sometimes delicate fibres — they respond well to gentle handling and a little patience.
-
Washing
• Cold hand wash or gentle machine cycle where possible
• Use a mild, natural detergent
• Do not bleach
• Avoid soaking for extended periods
• Do not tumble dry — lay flat or hang in the shade
• Iron on low-medium heat if needed, inside out
-
Storing
• Store clothes somewhere cool, dark and dry
• Ensure good ventilation and avoid overloading your cupboards or drawers
• Avoid storing clothes in vacuum packs - clothes need to breathe
• For long term storage make sure the garments are freshly washed and completely dry. Pack into airtight containers, separate each with tissue paper.
-
A few good habits
• Spot clean small marks before washing the whole garment
• Air your garment between wears — most fibres need less washing than you think. A nice laundry spray does wonders.
• If a seam starts to go, catch it early with your patch kit before it becomes a larger repair
• Embrace the marks — a garment that’s been lived in has earned its character
How to Mend
Visible mending is not a last resort — it’s an art form. A patch placed with care becomes part of the garment’s story.
1. Trim any loose threads around the area to be mended.
2. Place your fabric patch behind or over the area, right side facing out.
3. Using a needle and thread, stitch around the edges of the patch with small, even stitches.
4. Tie off securely and trim the thread.
5. Press gently with a warm iron to set.
Your stitches don’t need to be perfect — they need to be yours.
We've got your back.
We offer an optional patch kit that can be added to any order. It includes a needle, thread, and a few handy tips to help keep your garment in circulation. We keep it optional because sustainability isn't just about repairing things, it's also about not sending people things they won't use.
Need a hand with repairing your own garment? let us know, we're happy to help.
And if the repair feels too big, too precious, or simply not your cup of tea, get in touch. We'd much rather see a garment mended than sitting unworn at the back of a wardrobe.
All you need to do is get it to and from our studio. We can chat about the rest.
Thank you for choosing sustainability
Every Githerments garment was made slowly and locally — and it was made to be with you for a long time. We’re grateful you’re part of that story.
